Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
A Facelift rejuvenates the aging face and neck by removing excess skin and tightening the deeper facial tissues. This is an effective procedure for sagging neck lines and jowls, and deep wrinkling of the face. In order to obtain the best results, rhytidectomy is often combined with other procedures such as browlift, eyelid surgery or liposuction under the chin, but this varies from patient to patient. The surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia, and usually lasts several hours. Incisions are typically placed around the ear and within the hair-bearing scalp to minimize their visiblity. During the surgery, the surgeon separates the skin from the face, tightens the deeper tissues and redrapes the skin in a pleasing manner. Excess skin and tissue is removed. Small drainage tubes may be placed under the skin to remove excess fluid, and these are usually removed in one or two days. After the surgery, an overnight stay is routine. Most patients resume household activities within one or two days. Pain and discomfort following the surgery are typically controlled with oral pain medication, and are not severe. Most stitches are removed within one week after surgery, and within ten days to two weeks most patients can return to work. Some bruising and /or swelling may persist longer, depending on the exact nature of the surgery and the patient.
